Imperial Winter Beta Signups [closed for now - will reopen soon]

BETA SIGNUPS ARE CLOSED TO NEW APPLICATIONS
FOR NOW
We will reopen applications once we move into a more complete unit-set testing phase. Note that we are still letting people into the beta, we are simply closing the thread to new applications. Read on for more info.
We have decided to close signups because we have more then enough people to choose from inside this thread already, and we're only going to upset people who sign up now and are not invited, given the slow rate that we are actually taking people into the beta. We didn't start this thread to upset anyone, and we're absolutely flattered by the large amount of signups that we've received, but we're worried that we're alienating some of our fanbase by not bringing more people in - it's not your fault, we just haven't progressed enought to warrant more testers!
It is still possible to get into the beta if you are not in this thread if you can fulfill one of the following
:
- you are a spring engine developer
- you have
demonstrable
mod-making experience (coding, modelling, texturing, etc)
- Or, you have a reference from a current beta-tester.
Please note that if you harass any current testers for a reference then that will rule you out of the beta
If you fill any of the above requirements, please send me a PM with your application (using the template in this thread). If you have demonstrable mod-making experience, please include some examples (images, links to past work, etc) in your message.
Thanks for your patience guys; please contact me with any problems / concerns / criticisms.
--------------------original signup post---------------------------
Things are moving along at a terrific pace here, and our internal testing has ramped up as we hammer IW into a playable shape.
We are
almost
ready to bring in some more players for testing. As has been mentioned, this beta will be
closed
.
People will only be able to access the mod in an
invite only
manner. The main reason we are doing this is because we want to keep the beta limited to people who understand Spring and understand and are willing to deal with a 'rough' product. IW has the potential to tap into a large player base of Star Wars fans who have never heard of Spring. We only really have one go at getting those people to try our game out - and I think many of them would be put off by the unfinished state it is in. Therefore, we are not having an Open Beta, as this could be mistaken for a release.
Also, for obvious reasons it is helpful for us to have controls on how many people, and what sort of people are and aren't allowed in the beta.
Players who want to take part in the beta should, after reading the rest of this thread carefully, post here once only in the specified format. We'll contact you via PM on these forums if you've been selected. Please don't harass us about joining the beta - posting here once is the only thing you can do to be considered, anything else will just make you more unlikely to be picked.
Before you sign up, it is
essential
that you understand the following:
- IW is an
unfinished product
. It will have balance problems. Probably some big ones. It is still prone to game-ruining errors and occasional crashes. You
must
be prepared to accept these and provide information related to such events so we may fix them.
- We are not interested, at this point, in huge Star Wars fans who want to play with Stormtroopers and TIE fighters.
We are trying to make a game here, and the only reason we are having a beta is to fix problems and make sure that it is well balanced and interesting. If you really, really want to play IW to have cool battles with Star Wars units, then perhaps you should be patient and wait for our main release. I think you'll be a lot happier with our final product, and have a lot more fun!
What we really need is people who:
- are willing to play lots of games of IW, on lots of different maps
- are going to continually come back to us with lots of feedback
- are able to give us technical bug feedback, and considered, thought-through balance feedback
- are going to be patient with the various problems that are likely to occur throughout the process
- People who are going to play competitively - that is, to win. Not so much people who want to sit back and build huge fortresses. If '20 minutes no attacking' is your idea of fun, I think (and hope) you'll have a great time when we do our public release, but your beta feedback is likely to be less helpful then a competitive player
If you would like to take part in the beta, please post with the following format:
- Your local timezone, relative to GMT
- Times in which you are most active
in GMT
- Any other nicknames you are known by, on the spring forums and the lobby
- Any prior experience you have modding, for any game
- Any experience playing competitively in Spring, proven by ladder rankings
- Any other specific reasons why you would be helpful to us in the beta (be reasonable here. Being the biggest star wars fan does not count
)
Here's an example

Prior Spring Competitive play experience:
None
Other reasons why I could be helpful:
- I have been involved in the Spring community since it's advent, and was a long-time member of the TA community prior to this.
- I played OTA competitively, for a while being able to play on a competitive level with some of the gnugs.
- I participated in the SupCom invite-only beta, as well as the public-beta
- I played SupCom competitively, and broke into the top 50 players for a few weeks shortly after it's release.
- I was involved in balance testing AATA and then Spring:1944
- I do not play speedmetal or any of it's derivatives
--------------------------------------------------------
Finally, I've attached the EULA which everyone must agree to if they want to download and play IW. There's not much in it that hasn't already been mentioned here though - it's mostly straight forward common-sense type stuff.

I live in the GMT -5 time zone (Central Time)
I run two fairly rare OSes: Linux with WINE 1.0 rc3 and Vista Ultimate 64-bit, and can test stability on those platforms
I'm active anytime from 10:00 to 22:00
I have 3 stripes in spring....
Just one question. Does this game intend to have single player support in any of the betas or the finals?

The first round of invites have been sent out. This was just a small handful of people to test the latest build, we expect to expand it soon.
People were decided based on recommendations from various team members and current testers.
In the future people will typically be chosen much more at random, to keep things fair.
Please don't be offended or upset if you haven't made it in this round, you're obviously our most committed fans, and the last thing I want to do is get you off-side! At the moment we're keeping the testing pool small to get things under control.
There will be further invites
and this will likely be sooner rather then later,
so be patient!
And most especially, don't be afraid to sign up here just because we've already sent out some invites! There will be more!

- most active: 6:00 to 18:00 GMT
- Names: 123v[NOTA], 123vtemp, 123v, 1-23v
- Moding XP: Atm i can only do as much as I am doing with NOTA. I am currently testing NOTA for Balance, bugs, and game play.
I can not be of much use for mod work as I will be sorting out HD issues for some time longer. Once I have that straited out I can actually contribute some decent work.
- Competitive XP: I have played or observed nearly all the common RTS games and many uncommon games. Many a spring player can vouch for me as an opponent to fear.
- Any other reasons: This looks like a mod with potential, and for that I would want to make sure it can be the best it can be. PS - I perfectly fit the description of the type of help you said you want.
- What kind of player am I? The first few units I build are almost always units for immediate aggression.
- For the record I got my gold star rank in spring from playing mods other than BA. BA makes up only about 5%[or less] of my game time.
Thor and Cake can vouch for me(NOTA Creators). Overkill will vouch for me, and [EE]Decimator will likely vouch for me.

Prior Spring Competitive play experience: None
Other reasons why I could be helpful:
- I have played rts games since the advent of the genre i.e. populous.
- I was one of best ota players for several years and played when it came out. I was delighted to discover spring when it came out.
- I play several mods regularly including ba, nota, ca and sa.
- I have tried many more spring mods and look forward to another hopefully popular mod.
- I believe that flexible strategic thinking should be rewarded more than speed of clicks since it leads to more diverse and interresting gameplay.
- I do not play speedmetal or any of it's derivatives except perhaps duck and cow
- I do not know lua but can code c, c++ & c# so i have an understanding of programming principles.
- I prefer team games as they require coordination which adds another dimension to gameplay.
- I am not adverse to porcing
but i prefer the ebb and flow of skirmish games.
