Presenting the Imperial Orbital Uplink Facility.

This facility is one of the most advanced and expensive of all the Imperial structures. When there are imperial forces engaged on a planet, typically there will be some sort of imperial presence in orbit to assist with the logistics of battle below. However, these craft rarely entail a battlefleet. The presence of an Orbital Uplink Facility, however, means that there is most definitely an Imperial Warship in orbit above the planet.

These facilities are rarely employed by the Imperials - only in the rare instances when a Rebel force is heavily entrenched, and bathing the entire planet in fiery death unfortunately not an option is this facility used.

When constructed, it allows the Imperial general to call down orbital bombardment strikes on Rebel positions. These strikes tend to be quite inaccurate, but extremely powerful, bathing an area in destruction.

Without the uplink facility, however, targetting from orbit is too risky, and so the orbiting Imperial destroyer will be unable to fire on ground targets, so the Rebels will be hard pressed to destroy the facility as soon as possible.

Mind me... what's the other bigass building besides the I.M.U.F.?
That trapezoidal square cube building...
The command center? I don't recall such a thing...

Yeah I've seen it before, that's why I ask... what is the spaceport? the un-advanced imp air factory? a market or what?

Yeah, it's just the standard Imperial air factory where you access TIE Fighters and the like. Technically it isn't even called a spaceport, it just used to be in the old SWTA port... The reason it is so big is so we could fit all the aircraft inside it; we've aimed for an accurate scale for most of the units in IW, but that means units like the LAAT force the air factories to be huge.

We are still thinking about what to do with the ion cannon, we'd like to see it involved in some way, but at this point haven't decided. In Star Wars Total Annihilation the rebel super weapon was a long ranged cannon that could fire most of the map and froze most units, but I don't know if that's relevant in the new game design. We'll keep thinking about it.
